A useful way to group them
Beliefs that hide achievement
These make progress feel invisible:
- “It doesn’t count.”
- “Anyone could have done that.”
- “I should have done more.”
- “I was just lucky.”
- “It wasn’t perfect.”
These beliefs stop people from owning evidence of growth.
Beliefs that block needs
These make human needs feel inconvenient or undeserved:
- “My needs are selfish.”
- “I shouldn’t need help.”
- “Other people have it worse.”
- “I need to earn rest.”
- “I’m a burden.”
These beliefs often lead to overgiving, exhaustion, resentment, or disconnection.
Beliefs that suppress strengths
These make strengths feel ordinary, unsafe, or risky:
- “That’s not really a strength.”
- “I’m not expert enough.”
- “People will think I’m showing off.”
- “I don’t have anything valuable to say.”
- “I should wait until I’m ready.”
These beliefs keep people from using what is already working within them.
Beliefs that disconnect people from values
These create inner conflict:
- “I have to fit in.”
- “I can’t be honest.”
- “I must please everyone.”
- “It’s not safe to be myself.”
- “My values don’t matter here.”
These beliefs often leave people feeling misaligned, flat, resentful, or stuck.
Coaching reflection question
A simple but powerful question would be:
“What would become possible if this belief was no longer running the show?”
Or even more directly:
“Is this belief protecting me, limiting me, or both?”
Because many limiting beliefs are not random. They often began as protective beliefs. At some point, they may have helped the person stay safe, accepted, useful, or in control.
The work is not always to attack the belief.
It is often to ask:
“Is this still the best way to protect me now?”
